Entrevista: Thulcandra

O Polêmico Rock realizou recentemente uma entrevista com Steffen Kummerer (Obscura, Thulcandra, Dehydrated). Confira a entrevista abaixo.

Polêmico Rock – Olá rapazes! É um prazer enorme estar aqui entrevistando uma banda tão promissora como o Thulcandra. Então me diga, nós temos aqui um elemento do Obscura, o Steffen Kummerer, uma banda o qual possui uma legião de fãs ao redor do mundo. E temos o Sebastian e o Tobias, que têm trabalhado juntos em outros projetos. Eu diria que o Thulcandra é um projeto totalmente diferente do Obscura e dos demais projetos. Como aconteceu esta idéia de formar o Thulcandra?

Steffen Kummerer – Nós formamos a banda em 2003, Jürgen Zintz e eu, Steffen Kummerer, na guitarra e como compositor principal. Somente um ano após já tínhamos uma demo, que tinha sido gravada em um pequeno estúdio em Landshut (Alemanha), intitulada “Perishness Around Us”. Infelizmente nós nunca a lançamos, pois não estávamos satisfeito com a qualidade e com a mixagem final que obtivemos. Alguns meses depois, Jürgen decidiu passar desta vida para uma melhor. Depois de sua morte, a banda esteve parada por um bom tempo. Na verdade, também não havia possibilidade de continuar com o Thulcandra. Até eu me mudar para outra cidade, quando (algum tempo depois) eu tropecei em algumas demos e ensaios antigos gravados, e a demo de “Perishness Around Us”. Quando eu escutei aquilo, todas aquelas canções, eu senti que toda aquela coisa não deveria ficar guardada (Na verdade Steffen diz “toda aquela coisa não teve o final que mereceu”). Em 2008, finalmente comecei a trabalhar em um novo material, e rearranjei alguns riffs e canções antigas para tornar base do que hoje é o álbum “Fallen Angel`s Dominion”. Quando os insanos irmãos gêmeos Tobias & Sebastian Ludwig juntaram-se, Thulcandra teve seu renascimento, e o seu álbum de estréia foi então finalizado.

Polêmico Rock – Nós temos dois grandes álbuns gravados: o “Fallen Angel`s Dominion”(2010) e o “Under a Frozen Sun” (2011). Então, poderemos esperar outro lançamento em 2012? (risos) Eu pergunto isso apenas de curiosidade, pois quando eu ainda estava apreciando o primeiro álbum, o segundo veio de repente.

Steffen Kummerer – Nós estamos sempre trabalhando em novos materiais, então neste momento nós temos algumas idéias, ainda que rudimentares, para um próximo álbum, mas nós não devemos lançar um álbum por ano. As canções estarão terminadas quando sentirmos que é o que temos o melhor a oferecer. Assim que estivermos satisfeitos com nós mesmos, então a canção estará pronta, e não antes disso. Dito isso, acho que você poderá esperar um álbum nosso dentro de dois anos.

Polêmico Rock – O que significa exatamente a palavra Thulcandra?

Steffen Kummerer – “Thulcandra” na verdade é o nome da segunda demo tape do Darkthrone, Noruega. Muito rudimentar, mas com charme. Logo, este conceito se encaixa perfeitamente a nós, esse lance de chegar com materiais relativamente antigos.

Polêmico Rock – Vocês pretendem fazer alguma turnê mundial? Ou essa seria a intenção em um futuro próximo?

Steffen Kummerer – O Thulcandra nunca será aquela banda de fazer mais de cem shows ao ano. Nós só fazemos os shows que nós queremos, e nada mais. Talvez possamos realizar outra turnê Européia para a divulgação de “Under a Frozen Sun” se a recompensa for razoável. No geral mantemos as razões bem específicas.

Polêmico Rock – Thulcandra possui influências diretas do Dissection, ou talvez Watain. Letras, timbre de guitarras e a própria atmosfera, são alguns elementos que podemos associar diretamente ao Dissection. Como um fã de Metal Extremo reconheço que o Thucandra está trilhando seu próprio caminho, mas as influências são algo bem relevante. Sempre foi a intenção da banda, preservar uma parte do legado de Jon Nödtveidt (Guitarrista/Vocalista do Dissection - R.I.P)?

Steffen Kummerer – Bom, o Dissection é uma enorme influência para nós. Mas, Watain? Não. Nós escrevemos as canções na veia dos anos 90, por exemplo, bandas como Vinterland, The Moaning, Abigor, Eucharist, os quais foram grande influência. Bandas que eram capazes de tocar seus instrumentos e fazer boas canções. Eu aprecio muito as músicas criadas por Nödtveit, mas o absurdo ideológico criado por ele, eu pouco me identifico. A música é importante, e não determinadas imagens.

Polêmico Rock – Há alguma outra banda que você gostaria de destacar como importante influência para o Thulcandra?

Steffen Kummerer – Vinterland, The Moaning, Unanimated, Abigor, Eucharist, Dissection, Mörk Gryning – Todas essas bandas estão quase que esquecidas. Triste, mas é verdade.

Polêmico Rock – Assim como o Dissection, você considera o Thulcandra uma banda satanista?

Steffen Kummerer – Eu considero Thulcandra como uma banda tributo à cena do começo dos anos 90.

Polêmico Rock – Como funciona o processo de composição das músicas?

Steffen Kummerer – As músicas são classicamente embasadas em alguns riffs criados a partir de várias sessões. Trabalhamos sob essas raízes, e assim adicionamos bateria, linhas de guitarra, outras camadas de melodia e baixo. Finalmente depois de tudo arranjado pela banda, as linhas de vocal serão escritas. Eu sou o maior ou principal compositor, enquanto Sebastian & Tobias Ludwig contribuem com suas idéias e trazem o que tem em mente. Por fim, as letras são todas escritas por Sebastian Ludwig, exceto o título “Under a Frozen Sun”, que se trata de um convidado especial, Morean do Dark Fortress.

Polêmico Rock – Sobre a arte de capa, ambas se tratam de uma espécie de anjo caído, e pintado em tons de preto e azul. Eu realmente aprecio muito essas capas, porque elas proporcionam uma atmosfera realmente obscura. Qual a verdadeira intenção por trás destas capas? Eu sei que elas se adaptam às canções, com esta atmosfera bem obscura, mas gostaria de saber se há algum significado especial por trás delas.

Steffen Kummerer – Arte, produção, as fotos e as canções emergem exatamente da visão que temos quando começamos a compor “Under a Frozen Sun”. Kristian Wahlin teve a idéia de fazer esta capa quando estava escutando algumas músicas da pré-produção de “Under a Frozen Sun”, então a idéia é toda dele. Nós apenas enviamos algumas idéias a ele, e o resultado final é o que você esta vendo em ambas as capas.

Polêmico Rock - Posso dizer, absolutamente, que há muitos fãs de Thulcandra aqui no Brasil. Gostaria que você deixasse uma mensagem para eles.

Steffen Kummerer – Nós nos sentiríamos muito honrados em tocar no Brasil pela primeira vez, então se vocês estiverem interessados, entrem em contato. Muito obrigado por todo este suporte, e continuem arrebentando!

Polêmico Rock - Hi guys! It`s a big pleasure to be here interviewing a promising band like Thulcandra. So, tell me, we have a element from Obscura here, Steffen Kummerer, a band whose has a legion of fans around the world. And Sebastian and Tobias, who have been working together in other bands. I would say that Thulcandra is a project totally different from Obscura and the other ones. How did come the idea to create Thulcandra?

Steffen Kummerer  - We founded the band back in 2003 with Jürgen Zintz and me, Steffen Kummerer, on guitars and main composers. Just one year later the first rehearsal demo 'Perishness around us' was recorded in a small battered studio in Landshut, Germany. Unfortunately we never released it, as we where not satisfied with the quality and the final mix we got. A few months later Jürgen decided to explore the space between a train and the rails, so with his passing the whole band was on hold for many years. Actually there was no chance to go on with Thulcandra until I moved into another city and stumbled across our old rehearsal demos and the 'Perishness around us' MCD. When I listened to the whole songs I felt that the whole thing was not closed as it should be. In 2008, I finally started to work on new material and re arranged some old riffs and tracks to form the basis of what is now 'Fallen Angel's Dominion'. When the grim twins Tobias & Sebastian Ludwig joined the fold, Thulcandra was reborn and the debut album was finished.

Polêmico Rock - We have already two great records done here: “Fallen Angel`s Dominion” (2010) and “Under a Frozen Sun” (2011). Should we expect another in 2012? (laughs) I mean, it`s just curiosity, because I was still enjoying the first record, when the second one suddenly came!

Steffen Kummerer  - We are always working on new Material so right now we have a couple of rough ideas for another album but we don't have to release an album year by year. The songs are finished when we feel they are the best we can provide at a certain time. As soon as we a satisfied by ourselves, the song is done, not before. With that said I guess you can expect a new album within the next couple of years.

Polêmico Rock – What means exactly the word “Thulcandra” ?

Steffen Kummerer  - Thulcandra is actually the second demo tape of Darkthrone, Norway. Very rought but with charme, so it fits perfectly to our attitude to come up with some old fashioned material.

Polêmico Rock - Are you guys planning some World Tour? Or I mean, is that the intention in a near future?

Steffen Kummerer  - Thulcandra will never be a band that is able to do 100+ shows a year. We just play the shows we want to play, nothing more. Maybe we can realize another European Tour for “Under A Frozen Sun” if the offer is reasonable. In general we keep the live situation pretty specific.

Polêmico Rock - Thulcandra has influences directly from Dissection or maybe from Watain. Lyrics, guitar tone (timbre) and the atmosphere are some elements that we can take as influences from Dissection. As a fan of extreme metal, I recognize that Thulcandra is running his own path, but influences from Dissection is outstanding here. Is that the intention, to preserve some part of the legacy started by Jon Nödtveidt?

Steffen Kummerer  - Well, Dissection are a huge influence that is for sure. But Watain? No. We write music in the vein of the early 90ies, bands such as Vinterland, The Moaning, Abigor, Eucharist where most influencial. Bands that where able to play their instruments and write good songs. I enjoy the music Nödtveit created, but the ideological nonsense he produced is nothing I can identify with. The music is important, not a certain image.

Polêmico Rock - Are there any other bands that you would like to consider as a important influence for Thulcandra?

Steffen Kummerer  - Vinterland, The Moaning, Unanimated, Abigor, Eucharist, Dissection, Mörk Gryning – all those old bands that are almost forgotten. Sad but true.

Polêmico Rock - As Dissection was, do you consider Thulcandra a satanic band?

Steffen Kummerer  - I consider Thulcandra as a tribute band to the music of the early 90ies.

Polêmico Rock - How it works the composition process?

Steffen Kummerer  - The songs are classically based on a few guitar riffs that are created during various sessions. On those roots we work on and on, adding drum lines, lead guitars, melody layers and the bass guitar. Finally everything gets arranged by the band and the vocals are going to be written. Musical wise I am the main composer while Sebastian & Tobias Ludwig contribute with their ideas and bring in whatever they have in mind. This time the lyrics are written in their entirely by Sebastian Ludwig, exept the title track, “Under A Frozen Sun” is a written guest appearance by Morean of Dark Fortress.

Polêmico Rock - About the artwork, both of them have a kinda fallen angel, and painted in tones of black and blue. I love those covers (artwork), because It causes a atmosphere really obscure. What`s the intention behind those covers (artwork)? Yeah, I know that the artwork coincides with the lyrics atmosphere, but I just would like to know if there is a special meaning behind them.

Steffen Kummerer - Artwork, production, photography and the songs merge exactly into the vision we had when we started to compose “Under A Frozen Sun”. The artwork was drawn by Kristian Wahlin on the inspiration he got while he listened to the preproduction of a few songs for the new album so it is completely his own work. We just sent him a few ideas to come up with and the final result is what you see on both of the albums.

Polêmico Rock – I have to say, absolutely, that there are a lot of Thulcandra fans here in Brazil. Please, I would like you to leave some message for brasilian fans.
